Surface plasmons have also been employed in a wide spectrum of studies rangingfromelectrochemistry[25],wetting[26]andbiosensing[27–29]toscanningtunnelling Long-range surface plasmon polaritons (LRSPPs) are optical surface waves that propagate along a thin symmetric metal slab or stripe over an appreciable length (centimeters). Vigorous interest in LRSPPs has stimulated a large number of studies over three decades spanning a broad topical landscape. Naturally, a good segment of the literature covers fundamentals such as modal characteristics referred to as plasmon-polaritons. In solid-state physics the term polariton accounts for all elementary excitations which couple to light.

hal-01651336 1.1 Surface plasmon photonics A surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic wave propagating at the interface between a metal and a dielectric material that is coupled to a charge density oscillation of the free electrons at the surface of the metal [1,2]. Because SPPs are bound to the interface and their electric eld decays expo- on so-called surface plasmon polariton optics. A surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic excitation existing on the surface of good metals [2, 3].

Indeed, surface-plasmon polaritons can serve as a basis for constructing nanoscale photonic circuits that will be able to carry optical signals and electric currents [48,49]. Surface plasmons can also serve as a basis for the design, fabrication and characterization of subwavelength waveguide components [50–64].

In the intensity reflection spectra, the TE-polarization, which is not involved in the coupling with the surface plasmon, distorts and partially masks the two coupled plasmonic oscillators related to the hybrid TPP-SPP mode. “Surface plasmons on smooth and rough surfaces and on gratings” Heinz Raether(Univ Hamburg), 1988, Springer-Verlag “Surface-plasmon-polariton waveguides” A wide-angle frequency beam scanning antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is proposed for planar integrated communication circuits. The SSPP-based antenna is constructed by hole arrays etched on the standard 50 Ω coplanar waveguide, which can achieve ultrawide bandwidth and wide-angle beam scanning from backward direction to forward direction as the frequency changes.
The surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic surface wave that can travel along an interface between two media with different dielectric constants. Surface wave - Wikipedia It often (but not exclusively) involves metallic components, which can transport and focus light via surface plasmon polaritons. In this thesis the properties of long-range surface plasmon polariton waveg-uides and devices are investigated using the finite element method.

The resonant excitation of surface plasmon–polariton waves in metal gratings with rectangular and sinusoidal relief was studied. The main characteristics of the resonant excitation of a surface plasmon–polariton wave were obtained using analytical methods due to the fact that the resonance is excited at a grating thickness much smaller than a wavelength (1.064 µm).
